On screen

The Don sends Luca Brasi, his loyal killer, to find out what the dealer Sollozzo is up to. Brasi goes to a hotel bar and pretends he is ready to switch sides, but Bruno Tattaglia and Sollozzo already know. A knife pins his hand to the bar and a cord tightens around his neck. Later a fish wrapped in his bulletproof vest arrives at the family home: a Sicilian message that Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes.

The place today

In the 1930s this was New York’s largest hotel, with more than 2,600 rooms. Today the building holds apartments and student housing, with an entrance to the Clark Street subway station at street level. Brooklyn Heights is a lovely neighbourhood, and its Promenade looks straight across at Manhattan.

Did you know? According to Scouting NY, Brasi’s walk down the hotel corridor was filmed at the rear entrance of the Hotel Edison on West 46th Street in Manhattan.
