On screen
December 1945. Michael and Kay come out of the Best & Co. department store on Fifth Avenue loaded with parcels, laughing and making plans for the holiday. It is one of the last moments when Michael is still just the son who wants nothing to do with the family business. Soon everything will change.
The place today
Best & Co. had already closed when the crew arrived and was briefly revived for the scene. In the mid-1970s the building was demolished; Olympic Tower, 51 storeys of dark glass, stands there now, with St Patrick’s Cathedral just across 51st Street.
