Oranges on Mott Street
Mott Street, the “Genco” offices — Little Italy and Chinatown, Manhattan
In the New York guidePlan a day here
On screen
The Don leaves the offices of his olive oil company, “Genco”, and crosses the street to buy fruit at a stand. Two of Sollozzo’s gunmen appear and shoot him again and again; he collapses in the road among rolling oranges. Fredo, who was supposed to protect him, fumbles his gun, drops it and sits weeping on the kerb.
The place today
The Mietz Building at 128 Mott Street played the “Genco” offices; its Art Deco entrance was built for the film. The ground floor has been completely remodelled, but the name “Mietz” is still on the façade. The block is part of Chinatown today, and at number 137, across the street, where the Don was shot, there is still a shop.
