The twist

Vito arrived in America… in Italy.

Ellis Island, the gateway to America, was filmed in an old fish market in Trieste. 1958 Havana was shot in Santo Domingo, the “Vatican” in a palace in Caprarola, and the Palermo opera house was rebuilt in Rome. And what was shot in New York? Nearly everything else, from Staten Island to the Bronx.

Connie’s wedding

📍 The Corleone house — Staten Island, New York

On screen

August 1945. Connie, daughter of Don Vito Corleone, marries Carlo Rizzi, and the whole family celebrates in the garden. Meanwhile, in his dark study, the Don receives those who come to ask a favour, because no Sicilian can refuse a request on his daughter’s wedding day. Michael arrives in uniform with Kay and explains who his family are: “That’s my family, Kay. It’s not me.”

The place today

A private home in Todt Hill, at 110 Longfellow Avenue. The tall stone wall and gate seen in the film were a styrofoam set, removed long ago; the house itself looks much as it did on screen. A family lives here: photograph quietly from the street and don’t go in.

Did you know? According to Wikipedia, almost 750 local residents took part in the wedding scene as extras.

On screen

Paulie Gatto, the Don’s driver, “was sick” on the very day of the shooting, and Sonny knows he is the traitor. Clemenza takes Paulie and Rocco for a drive. On a desolate road through the marshes, with the Statue of Liberty on the horizon, Clemenza stops to relieve himself and Rocco shoots Paulie from the back seat. Clemenza walks back to the car and delivers the famous line: “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”

The place today

According to New Jersey’s Department of Environmental Protection, the scene was shot in 1971 on an unmarked road that later became part of Liberty State Park, at a bend closer to Phillip Street than to Freedom Way. The spot lies inside a fenced 210-acre interior, closed to the public since the early 1980s because of contamination and now being restored. The rest of the park is open, with a waterfront walk facing the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan, and ferries to the statue and Ellis Island.

Did you know? According to a 2022 Yahoo News report, Richard Castellano, who played Clemenza, ad-libbed the cannoli part. As Clemenza leaves home at the start of the scene, his wife reminds him not to forget the cannoli; according to Scouting NY, that house is at 1999 East 5th Street in Brooklyn.

In the story

In the story nine-year-old Vito arrives here in 1901, and the immigration clerk turns “Vito Andolini from Corleone” into “Vito Corleone”. But the scene wasn’t filmed here: the hall was shot in Trieste’s old fish market, in Italy.

The place today

Its main building is now the National Museum of Immigration, reached by ferry from Battery Park in Manhattan or from Liberty State Park, with a stop at the Statue of Liberty. Did you know?

Behind the scenes

A styrofoam wall

The wall around the “Corleone compound” on Staten Island was made of styrofoam and taken down after filming. The house itself is real, and still a private home.

The head was real

According to Wikipedia, the horse’s head came from a dog-food company, and the horse was going to be killed regardless.

Three tollbooths

For Sonny’s death, three tollbooths were built on a military airfield runway on Long Island. It took three days to film and cost over $100,000.

The first shot

The first shot on the schedule, on 29 March 1971, was Michael and Kay shopping outside Best & Co. on Fifth Avenue. The building is gone; Olympic Tower stands there now.

The cannoli was ad-libbed

According to Yahoo News, the second half of “Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.” wasn’t in the script: Richard Castellano, who played Clemenza, ad-libbed it.

Ellis Island in Italy

The moment Vito gets his American name was filmed in Trieste’s old fish market, some 6,800 km from the real Ellis Island.

Havana without Cuba

The US embargo ruled out Cuba, so 1958 Havana was shot in Santo Domingo. According to Wikipedia, Charles Bluhdorn, whose conglomerate owned Paramount, was keen to develop the Dominican Republic as a filming location.

The Vatican in Caprarola

Most of Part III’s “Vatican” was filmed at Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola, an hour north of Rome: Gilday’s office, the stairs where he dies, even the outside of the Sistine Chapel.

The hotel that was imploded

The Tropicana, where according to movie-locations the Las Vegas chapter was filmed, was imploded in October 2024; a baseball stadium is going up in its place.

One church, two films

The baptism in the first film and Michael’s ceremony in Part III were shot in the same church, St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral on Mulberry Street, 18 years apart.

The church that burned

The Staten Island church the family walks out of after the baptism burned shortly after filming. Only the façade survived, and a smaller church was built behind it.

An echo of a real case

The banker found hanging under a bridge in Part III recalls Roberto Calvi, “God’s banker”, found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982.
