Ponte Sant’Angelo — Rome
In the Rome guidePlan a day here
On screen
Keinszig, the banker who vanished with the money, is murdered during the opera. His body is left hanging under a bridge over the Tiber, so that it looks like suicide.
The place today
An ancient Roman bridge over the Tiber leading to Castel Sant’Angelo, lined with ten 17th-century angel statues designed by Bernini. It is for pedestrians only, and St Peter’s Square is a ten-minute walk away.
Did you know? According to Wikipedia, it echoes the death of Roberto Calvi, head of Banco Ambrosiano, who was found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982; in 2002 the courts ruled it was murder.
