Sonny beats Carlo
Pleasant Avenue and 118th Street — East Harlem, Manhattan
In the New York guidePlan a day here
On screen
Sonny finds out that Carlo, Connie’s husband, has been beating her. He drives to East Harlem, finds Carlo sitting on a stoop with friends and drags him into the street. In front of the whole neighbourhood he beats him with his fists, a garbage-can lid and the fire hydrant, and warns him that if he touches her again he’s dead. Carlo does not forget the humiliation.
The place today
A quiet corner of “Italian Harlem”, once one of New York’s largest Italian communities. According to Scouting NY, the stoop Carlo sat on is still there, and so are the street’s cobblestones. A few blocks south, by the church on 115th Street, the Italian Giglio feast is still held every summer.
