Fanucci and the feast
East 6th Street, between Avenues A and B — East Village, Manhattan

On screen
The neighbourhood is celebrating a saint’s feast: a procession, a band, fireworks and stalls. Vito, who has decided not to pay Fanucci, climbs onto the rooftops and follows him above the crowd. In the stairwell of Fanucci’s building he waits, wraps the gun in a towel and fires. Then he goes back to sit on the stoop with his wife and children, holding baby Michael in his arms: “Your father loves you very much.”
The place today
An ordinary East Village residential block: brick walk-ups with fire escapes and a row of trees, with a big community garden on the corner of Avenue B. For the film the shopfronts were covered, carts and horses brought in, and the whole block went back to 1917. Today it is a quiet, pleasant street to stroll, a few minutes’ walk from Little Italy.
