“I know it was you, Fredo”
The National Palace — Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
On screen
New Year’s Eve at President Batista’s palace. In the middle of the celebration Michael takes Fredo’s head in both hands, kisses him and says: “I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart.” At midnight Batista announces he is resigning and fleeing, the rebels close in, and the party collapses into chaos. Michael escapes, and Fredo runs from him into the crowd.
The place today
A domed neoclassical palace built in the 1940s that still houses the Dominican presidency. You see it from outside, from the railings and the garden in front. A few minutes away is Santo Domingo’s old Colonial City, a World Heritage Site best explored on foot.
Did you know? According to Wikipedia, the US embargo ruled out filming in Cuba, so Havana was shot in Santo Domingo. Italian Wikipedia says filming there began on 2 January 1974.
