The stone from the well
Basilica of Santa Maria della Quercia — Viterbo, Lazio
In the Rome guidePlan a day here
On screen
In a convent cloister, Cardinal Lamberto takes a stone from the water and breaks it open: it has lain in the water for centuries, yet it is dry inside. So it is with men in Europe, he says: surrounded by Christianity, without it ever reaching them. Sick and weak, Michael makes his first confession in thirty years, and weeps as he admits he had his brother Fredo killed.
The place today
A Renaissance church on the edge of Viterbo, with Andrea della Robbia’s glazed terracotta lunettes over its doors, beside a Dominican convent with arcaded cloisters. According to Italian Wikipedia, the “Palermo” convent cloister was filmed here, in a part that was then a hotel. The church is open to visitors, and the cloisters can be seen during opening hours.
Did you know? In the story the convent is in Palermo. Its entrance was filmed in Erice, in Sicily, and, according to Italian Wikipedia, the cloister in Viterbo.
