On screen

The ceremony over, the family steps out of the church into the daylight: Connie with the baby, a proud Carlo, Kay at Michael’s side. Everyone congratulates the new godfather, and none of them yet knows what happened across the city at that very hour. The worst is still waiting for Carlo, later that same day.

The place today

The church of Saints Joachim and Anne, on Staten Island’s southern tip. According to movie-locations, it burned shortly after filming; the façade survived, and a smaller church was built behind it. Around it lies a nature preserve with bluffs, a beach on the bay and a path to a lighthouse.
