On screen
Anthony takes the stage in Mascagni’s opera, set in a Sicilian village on Easter Sunday. While he sings, the revenge unfolds, cut against the music: Connie offers Don Altobello poisoned cannoli in his box, Al Neri kills Archbishop Gilday in the Vatican, and the new Pope dies of poisoned tea.
The place today
Italy’s largest opera house and Europe’s third largest, opened in 1897. It was closed for a long restoration (1974–1997) during filming, so only the exterior and steps were shot here; the auditorium was recreated at Cinecittà in Rome. Today it offers guided tours and performances.
Did you know? The conductor on screen is Anton Coppola, the director’s uncle. The auditorium scenes were shot at Cinecittà because the theatre was closed for restoration.
