The steps
Teatro Massimo — Palermo

On screen
The performance ends and the family steps out onto the grand staircase. Mosca opens fire: one bullet hits Michael, the next kills his daughter, Mary. Vincent shoots the assassin. Michael kneels on the steps with Mary in his arms and lets out a long scream that begins in silence. One of cinema’s most harrowing moments, shot on the theatre’s real steps.
The place today
Italy’s largest opera house and Europe’s third largest, opened in 1897. It was closed for a long restoration (1974–1997) during filming, so only the exterior and steps were shot here; the auditorium was recreated at Cinecittà in Rome. Today it offers guided tours and performances.
