The first flying lesson

Alnwick Castle — Alnwick, Northumberland

In the Northern England guidePlan a day here

On screen

In their first flying lesson Neville’s broom runs wild and he falls. While the teacher takes him to the hospital wing, Malfoy snatches Neville’s Remembrall and flies off with it. Harry, who has never flown before, chases him and catches it in mid-air.

The place today

A medieval castle that is still home to the Dukes of Northumberland. It opens to visitors in season, roughly late March to October, with a ticket. In the Outer Bailey, right where the flying lesson was filmed, broomstick training sessions for children are included in the ticket.

Did you know? Matthew Lewis, who played Neville, recalled being strapped to a broomstick hanging from a crane mounted on a pickup truck.
