Crash-landing in the Whomping Willow
Alnwick Castle — Alnwick, Northumberland
In the Northern England guidePlan a day here
On screen
The car finally reaches Hogwarts and crashes into the Whomping Willow. The tree beats it furiously and throws out Harry, Ron and their trunks, and the battered car drives off alone into the Forbidden Forest.
The place today
A medieval castle that is still home to the Dukes of Northumberland. It opens to visitors in season, roughly late March to October, with a ticket. In the Outer Bailey, right where the flying lesson was filmed, broomstick training sessions for children are included in the ticket.
Did you know? No such tree grows at Alnwick: the Whomping Willow was built separately, at a studio.
