Glenfinnan Viaduct

📍 Glenfinnan, Scottish Highlands · ≈ 1 h 15 min there

Filmed here

Today

A working railway viaduct on the Fort William–Mallaig line. From the National Trust for Scotland visitor centre car park, a path climbs to the viewpoint in about 15 minutes. The Jacobite steam train crosses in season (in 2026, June to late October; book ahead), and ordinary trains cross all year. Never walk on the viaduct.

Eilean na Moine, Loch Eilt

📍 Loch Eilt, Scottish Highlands · ≈ 20 min there

Filmed here

Today

See the island from a rough lay-by on the A830 at the west end of the loch. The path is boggy, there are midges in summer and no facilities: the nearest toilets are at Glenfinnan. The Jacobite steam train runs along the loch, and there is nothing from the film on the island itself.

The hillside opposite the Clachaig Inn

📍 Glencoe, Scottish Highlands · ≈ 40 min there

Filmed here

Today

The hut is gone and the hillside is just a hillside again. The spot is right across the road from the Clachaig Inn, at the foot of Clachaig Gully above the little Torren Lochan. The climb is steep and can be boggy, and the inn’s car park is for customers.

  1. 4 The hillside opposite the Clachaig Inn
  2. 3 Steall Falls

Base yourself in Fort William: Glencoe and the hut’s hillside, the walk to Steall Falls in Glen Nevis, then the Glenfinnan Viaduct and the island in Loch Eilt on the road to Mallaig. The viaduct is best seen from the viewpoint as the Jacobite crosses. Rannoch station, in the middle of the moor, is easiest by train from Glasgow or Fort William.

Tips

Before you go

Book ahead

The Studio Tour sells no tickets on the day, and they sell out. Christ Church, the Bodleian tours and the Jacobite are also best booked ahead.

Seasons

Some places open only part of the year: Alnwick Castle (roughly late March to October), the Jacobite (summer and autumn), the Goathland steam railway and Lacock Abbey’s upstairs rooms. Check dates before you go.

Outdoors

At Malham Cove and the Cliffs of Moher the edge is unfenced, the path to Steall Falls is rough, and at Freshwater West you don’t swim. In bad weather, postpone.
