The boot on the hilltop
Ivinghoe Beacon — Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire
In the London guidePlan a day here
On screen
At dawn Harry, Hermione and the Weasleys climb a bare hill with Cedric Diggory and his father. At the top lies an old boot: everyone grabs it, and it whisks them away to the Quidditch World Cup.
The place today
An open chalk hill in the Chilterns, owned by the National Trust. It’s free, with wide views from the top, and it marks one end of the Ridgeway, one of England’s oldest national trails.
Did you know? According to the National Trust, the Ashridge Estate, which the hill belongs to, was the World Cup setting in this film; but despite the legend, none of its trees played the Whomping Willow.
