The Guildhall and De Vere House — Lavenham, Suffolk

Private property — view from outside Some buildings here are private and people live in them. Look only from public space, and go in only with permission or during visiting hours, if there are any.

On screen

On Christmas Eve Harry and Hermione reach snowy Godric’s Hollow, the village where Harry was born. They find Lily and James Potter’s grave and the family’s ruined house.

The place today

A medieval village of crooked timber-framed houses, free to wander. The Guildhall on the Market Place is a National Trust museum with an entry fee; De Vere House on Water Street is private and seen from outside only.

Did you know? Lavenham was filmed in secret with no actors; Harry and Hermione were added digitally. Which building played the Potters’ house? Sources disagree: a local paper says the Guildhall on the Market Place, while the owners of De Vere House say it was theirs.
