Hunting the troll

Gloucester Cathedral, the cloister — Gloucester

In the Oxford guidePlan a day here

On screen

On Halloween a troll gets loose in the castle. Harry and Ron realise Hermione hasn’t heard the warning and run through the corridors to find her, hiding behind a stone column as the troll’s huge shadow lumbers past.

The place today

A working cathedral; entry is free, with a suggested donation. The cloister, with its famous fan vaulting, is open in visiting hours, which change around services and events. Harry Potter cloister tours run on some Saturdays.

Did you know? The columns they hide behind belong to the Lavatorium, the monks’ medieval washing place in the north walk of the cloister.
